With the new 2013/14 season just around the corner, the Nottingham Lions are delighted to announce two more new additions to their roster.
The Lions have snapped up former Solihull Barons pair – Robert Perks and Connor McNaughton just ahead of the friendly charity game clash against their West Midlands rivals at the Hobs Moat Road rink this coming Sunday (25th August – 6pm face off).
26 year old, former GB Under-19 international Perks is equally at home in a defensive or forward position whilst 19 year-old forward McNaughton usually plies his trade on the right-wing.
McNaughton made his first six senior appearances for the Barons last season, whilst Perks weighed in with two goals and five assists from twenty-two appearances and has iced a total of 173 times for last season’s third place finishers over the previous seven campaigns.
Both born in Solihull, Connor and Robert join Chris Allen and Neil Adams in making the move to the National Ice Centre from the Barons over the summer and speaking to nottinghamlions.co.uk this week, it seems that the move to Lace City was an easy choice to make for the pair;
“I’ve chosen to play for the Lions this year as they are a high paced, fast working, co-operative team” said McNaughton - “I’ve played against a lot of the younger lads over the years and we all get on quite well!”
“We both have a strong work ethic, so we’ll be playing hard every game and trying to prove ourselves in a new team and our main aim is to win the league for a second year in row and stay as champions!” added Perks.
Head Coach Matt Bradbury was also pleased to have the pair on board for the new season; saying,
“Connor is young and keen to learn, he committed to us in the early part of the off season and has been training with the squad over the Summer.”
“Like with all of our younger and developing players competition for places is most important and I’m sure this will assist in his personal development – It won’t all happen overnight, but I’m sure he’s prepared to work hard and we’ll most definitely be looking to push him out of his comfort zone offering him the challenge he wants.”
Bradbury continued by describing the benefits that utility man Perks can bring to the team; adding,
“When someone like Perksy becomes available then you just cannot turn your nose up – he’s fitted into the changing room straight away and that is key. He wears is heart on his sleeve and has some key characteristics that every coach wants and I firmly believe he has a lot to offer.”
“I’m confident that his numbers will improve this season and we’ll see some real productivity from him.”
The Lions begin their Laidler Conference season with an away trip to Blackburn Eagles on Saturday 7th September (5.45pm) before they face Solihull in their opening home fixture at the NIC on Sunday 15th (7.30pm). Ticket details will be announced via nottinghamlions.co.uk on the 28th August.
