The Nottingham Lions are pleased to announce the return of netminder Martin Chalke for his second season at the National Ice Centre.
The twenty-six year-old Welshman is the third goalie to sign for the Lions this summer, after Tom Hovell and Warren Gilfoyle also signed on the dotted line for Nottingham's upcoming 2014/15 NIHL Laidler D2 campaign.
The Cardiff-born custodian had previously played with his home town rec team – Cardiff Ice Hounds before moving to the East Midlands and whilst he is seen as the team's third choice netminder, he will still provide very strong competition for Hovell and Gilfoyle and will make himself available if there is an injury, alternative commitments or a drop in form from the two youngsters.
Despite only making two apperances as back-up last season, Chalke was still as keen as ever to return to the Lions' den for the new campaign and said:
"Last season I enjoyed turning up to the rink when I wasn't busy working away and signing back here is the perfect fit for me - I've recently brought my first home with my girlfriend here in Nottingham and the majority of my good friends here also play for the Lions, so it all made sense to do it all again this season."
"This year, I want to improve a lot more, be more consistent and keep the two young goalies on their toes - I set simple goals for myself, things like telling myself to stand square to the puck or try and be ahead of the game and read a certain play to be in the best position possible to make that save."
Lions' head coach Matt Bradbury was also pleased to once again, have strength in-depth in the netminding department and added:
"It's nice to have 'Chalky' back on board again this year- we have seen a huge improvement on his skill set which is great to see with the hard work he puts in both on and off the ice."
"Obviously owning his own business, work can get in the way but on the other hand he is always there for his team mates - he's a likeable member of the squad and is a big fit in the changing room and at training and always has a smile on his face."
Nottingham’s season begins on Saturday 6th September with a trip to Blackburn Eagles (5.45pm), whilst their home campaign begins with a clash against local-rivals Sheffield Senators at the NIC on Sunday 14th September (7.30pm). Ticket details are available here.
