From The Bench
For the 2015-16 we will take our development process to the next level.
You will see this with the 33 man squad (said loosely with both Jessica and Samantha in the fold) that we have built this year:-
14 senior players
3 senior netminders
2 Under 18 netminders
6 Under 20’s
7 Under 18’s
It is more than likely that we will introduce even more up and coming youngsters as the season progresses.
It’s not just all about having them on your bench it’s about getting them involved on the ice and playing the game. It’s my job to find the combinations on the ice in training and game day to maximise player’s potential as well as to put us in a position to challenge at the end of 60 minutes hockey.
The introduction of the EIHA U20 league is a massive boost for us at the Lions as we now don’t have under 18 player’s that are not quite ready and that just drop out of the sport and those extra two years can make a huge difference especially with players growing, getting stronger and becoming more athletic. Also the opportunity to work with some of the great coaches we have working throughout the club will add to their progress.
In the 2013 we introduced the likes of Hall, Gretton, Glossop, Raynor and Humphries to name a few which means that they are now entering their third season of senior hockey so by the time they are official “seniors” they will be entering their 5th season!!
As always, recruiting and retaining players becomes the coaches' major concern as older players consider retirement, players with careers that lead them away from Nottingham and younger talent consider offers from teams higher up the hockey pyramid and we also have to consider direct competition with rival teams, who have the advantage of working with sizeable wage budgets.
'New Training Regime' is certainly a good way of delivering a new dimension we are adding to our game this season, as we focus more on working around the finer details of the game.
All in all the hard work will pay off and we look forward to producing the next crop of players to represent Nottingham at NIHL level, National Team level and onwards.
